Dasakam - 40 - Putana Moksham
Nandagopan, a man of great virtues, went to the kingdom of Mathura where Kamsa is ruling, to pay taxes. Vasudeva met Nadagopan and talked affectionately and very friendly to him. He congratulated Nandagopan and expressed his happiness over him begetting a son and conveyed that he is as happy as he would have got one.
Vasudeva warned Nandagopan of the bad omens which are felt at Gokulam at that time and hence instructed him to return home back as quickly as possible. Hearing it, Nandagopan fell in to apprehension about the safety of Krishna and set on his return to Gokulam.
In the meanwhile, Putana, the demoness, under Kamsa's order visited Nandagopan's house in the disguise of a beautiful woman, with hair adorned with beautiful and attractive flowers. She, after killing several infants, lifted Krishna in her hand, even while the other gopikas wondered amongst themselves as to who this beautiful lady was.
Awestruck by her charming looks, Gopis did not obstruct her when she took the child in her hand and went in to the house. She chose a place in the house and started to feed the child with her breast milk. Angered at Putana's killing of innocent children, Krishna fearlessly climbed on to her body and sucked the poison smeared breasts as if it was a huge mango fruit.
Krishna sucked the life of Putana, acting as if he was sucking the milk. She fell on the ground making thunderous sound with both hands stretched, reverting to her huge demoness form. Hearing the huge sound, entire Gokulam was in a state of shock. Seeing Krishna playing innocently on the dead body of Putana, Gopikas came and picked him up hurriedly.
Gopikas prayed to Lord, chanting his various names which brings auspiciousness to the world, seeking him to protect the child without knowing that Lord only is in the form of child Krishna in their hands. Bhattathiri requested Guruvayoorappan to free him from his disease and make him more devoted towards Lord.

तदनु नन्दममन्द शुभास्पदं
नृप पुरीं करदान कृते गतम्।
समवलोक्य जगाद भवत्-पिता
विदित-कंस-सहाय-जनोद्यम: ॥१॥
tadanu nandam amanda shubhaaspadaM
nR^ipa puriiM karadaana kR^ite gatam |
samavalOkya jagaada bhavat-pitaa
vidita kamsa sahaaya janOdyama: || 1 ||
अयि सखे तव बालक जन्म मां
सुखयतेऽद्य निजात्मज जन्मवत् ।
इति भवत्-पितृतां व्रज नायके
समधिरोप्य शशंस तमादरात् ॥२॥
ayi sakhe tava baalaka janma maaM
sukhayate(a)dya nijaatmaja janmavat |
iti bhavat-pitR^itaaM vraja naayake
samadhirOpya shashamsa tamaadaraat || 2 ||
इह च सन्त्य निमित्त शतानि ते
कटक सीम्नि ततो लघु गम्यताम् ।
इति च तत्-वचसा व्रजनायको
भवत्-अपाय-भिया द्रुतमाययौ ॥३॥
iha cha santya nimitta shataani te
kaTaka siimni tatO laghu gamyataam |
iti cha tat-vachasaa vrajanaayakO
bhavat-apaaya-bhiyaa druta maayayau || 3 ||
अवसरे खलु तत्र च काचन
व्रजपदे मधुराकृति:-अङ्गना ।
तरल षट्पद लालित कुन्तला
कपट पोतक ते निकटं गता ॥४॥
avasare khalu tatra cha kaachana
vrajapade madhuraakR^iti: anganaa |
tarala ShaTpada laalita kuntalaa
kapaTa pOtaka te nikaTaM gataa || 4 ||
सपदि सा हृत बालक चेतना
निशिचरान्वयजा किल पूतना ।
व्रज वधूष्विह केयम्-इति क्षणं
विमृशतीषु भवन्तम्-उपाददे ॥५॥
sapadi saa hR^ita baalaka chetanaa
nishicharaanvayajaa kila puutanaa |
vraja vadhuuShviha keyam-iti kshaNaM
vimR^ishatiiShu bhavantam-upaadade || 5 ||
ललित भाव विलास हृतात्मभि:
युवतिभि: प्रतिरोद्धुम्-अपारिता ।
स्तनमसौ भवनान्त निषेदुषी
प्रददुषी भवते कपटात्मने ॥६॥
lalita bhaava vilaasa hR^itaatmabhi:
yuvatibhi: pratirOddhum-apaaritaa |
stanamasau bhavanaanta niSheduShii
pradaduShii bhavate kapaTaatmane || 6 ||
समधिरुह्य तदङ्कम्-अशङ्कित:
त्वम्-अथ बालक लोपन रोषित: ।
महदिवाम्रफलं कुच मण्डलं
प्रतिचुचूषिथ दुर्विष दूषितम् ॥७॥
samadhiruhya tadankam-ashankita:
tvam-atha baalaka lOpana rOShita: |
mahadivaamraphalaM kucha maNDalaM
pratichuchuuShitha durviSha duuShitam || 7 ||
असुभिरेव समं धयति त्वयि
स्तनमसौ स्तनितोपम-निस्वना ।
निरपतत्-भयदायि निजं वपु:
प्रतिगता प्रविसार्य भुजावुभौ ॥८॥
asubhireva samaM dhayati tvayi
stanamasau stanitOpama-nisvanaa |
nirapatat-bhayadaayi nijaM vapu:
pratigataa pravisaarya bhujaavubhau || 8 ||
भयद घोषण भीषण विग्रह
श्रवण दर्शन मोहित वल्लवे ।
व्रजपदे तदुर: स्थल खेलनं
ननु भवन्तम्-अगृह्णत गोपिका: ।।९॥
bhayada ghOShaNa bhiiShaNa vigraha
shravaNa darshana mOhita vallave |
vrajapade tadura: sthala khelanaM
nanu bhavantam-agR^ihNata gOpikaa: || 9 ||
भुवन मङ्गल नामभिरेव ते
युवतिभि:बहुधा कृत रक्षण: ।
त्वमयि वातनिकेतन नाथ माम्
अगदयन् कुरु तावक सेवकम् ॥१०॥
bhuvana mangala naamabhireva te
yuvatibhi: bahudhaa kR^ita rakshaNa: |
tvamayi vaataniketana naatha maam
agadayan kuru taavaka sevakam || 10 ||
